Amid reports of shortages and disturbances among some of the retail locations, virtually all of the retail locations where the PS3 was available have reported requests exceeding stock. Many locations had patrons outside their store for 24 hours or more, waiting in line for the chance to be first with their system and games. Gamers who took home a PlayStation 3 today have reported that there have been no issues with Sony's online service, many rushing to reserve the screen name which they wanted before someone else was able to take it. The launch has not gone without problems however. Many people left empty handed from lines and stores which they had been waiting in for hours. GameStop and EB Games reported that they did not receive enough consoles to fulfill their initial pre-order numbers. Reports have also come in that retailer Toys R Us, who had been expecting enough stock to fulfill preorders, was not able to do so at all locations. From initial reports though, it seems that Sony has escaped some of the problems that plagued Microsoft last year during the XBox 360 launch. There have been some isolated reports of manufacturing defects, but no widespread issue of "dead on arrival" products that many consumer polls put at upwards of 12%% last year during the 360 launch. (To be fair, Microsoft maintains that the failure rate was about 2-3%%, on par with other consumer electronics.) Many people waiting in line were seaking to turn a quick profit on auction sites such as eBay or Yahoo! Auctions. "Buy something at a low price and sell it at a higher price," one fan explains. "I commend most of these sellers, I wanted to be one but could not see myself waiting in the rain to get one." However, some gamers who did not receive a console feel as if it is the resellers more than Sony who is depriving them of their purchase. "I know a few people who are having fun derailing these eBay'd PS3's with fake accounts and outrageous bids." Regardless, the ball is now in Sony's court to ship as many consoles as they can. "As a matter of fact, we're flying planes, full of PlayStation 3's," explains Sony Computer Entertainment of America's Kaz Harai. "And they're litterally landing every day, so that we can try and get those units into the hands of the consumers as quickly as possible." Initially Sony said they were shooting for 4 million wordwide by Christmas, however, that number has been pushed back to 2 million worldwide by the end of the year. Sony blames a scarcity of BluRay diodes for the manufacturing numbers. No sales figures or shipped numbers are available for North America yet, however it is clear that demand will far outpace supply until at least early 2007. |
